Love is Kind

At the beginning of the pandemic, I forgot my mask in my vehicle before entering a convenience store. everything was still so new and people were afraid. It was quite the walk back to my vehicle, but a truck driver near the entry stopped me and told me he had a full box of masks. He held out the box and allowed me to take one. He shared. It was something so simple, yet I saw the kindness in his eyes. I didn’t just see the kindness. I felt it too-emanating from his very being.

Kindness is not just a feeling. It is a behavior. It is much more than being cordial and courteous. It is instead a compassion which moves one to act. Kindness serves and is useful.

"Kindness is the golden chain by which society is bound together." —Johann Wolfgang von Goethe

When Jesus demonstrated kindness, the Bible tells us He was MOVED with compassion. He felt a stirring to DO something. So he did. Jesus, though extraordinary, was fully human when he walked this earth, showing no more compassion than you or I am capable of. When we show compassion we extend grace and mercy and respond in action.

Kindness, like patience, is a fruit of the Spirit and is at the core of what James calls “pure religion”.

“Pure and genuine religion in the sight of God the Father means caring for orphans and widows in their distress and refusing to let the world corrupt you.”

James 1:27

What are some ways you can demonstrate kindness?
  1. Volunteer-there are so many opportunities here. Find something that matters to you and to others. Then share your time.
  2. Financial support-once, twice, or recurring
  3. Cook for someone: a meal or a little something sweet.
  4. Have tea or coffee with someone
  5. Pay for someone else’s coffee or tea
  6. Let someone in front of you when in line.
  7. Be courteous to others on the highway and in the parking lots (We could certainly use more kindness and patience here!)
  8. Sit with someone who is alone.
  9. Mourn with those who mourn
  10. Celebrate with those who are celebrating
  11. Speak life into others. Be an encouraging voice.
  12. Give compliments
  13. Smile
  14. Check on your neighbors
  15. Hold doors open
  16. Pull out chairs
  17. Pray for others
  18. Pat others on the back
  19. Give them a fist bump
  20. If someone is searching for change and you have it, help them out.
  21. This one may be a bit controversial: Wear your mask if others are more comfortable when others do. Respect their needs and concerns.
  22. And on and on and on…

This is by no means a comprehensive list. Care about people. It’s really that simple.
